How most visitors see the island: door to door, with photo stops whenever you like and a local who knows which roads are slow today.
The Kandy to Ella line climbs through tea country in about seven hours. Reserved observation seats sell out weeks ahead.
Turn a long drive into a short hop between Colombo, the coasts and the hills when time matters more than budget.
Perfect for short hops in towns. Ride-hailing apps such as PickMe and Uber show the fare before you get in.
Typical door-to-door times. Outside the expressways the roads are good but slow, so plan on about 40 km an hour.
Most nationalities need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). Apply online before you fly and check the current rules for your passport.
The rupee (LKR) is a closed currency, so change money on arrival. Cards work in hotels and larger restaurants; carry cash for tuk-tuks, temples and markets.
Cover shoulders and knees, take off shoes and hats, and never pose for a photo with your back to a Buddha statue.
Every full moon is a public holiday. Alcohol isn't sold and some shops close, but temples are at their most atmospheric.
Tourist SIM cards with generous data are sold in the airport arrivals hall, and Wi-Fi is standard in hotels.
The supply is 230V and most sockets are Type D or G, so pack a universal adapter.
